Aww well, thinking about Kho Phangan does reveal some really good memories: beautiful weather, awesome hostel and even more awesome people. I loved my time in Kho Phangan and really I loved the time in Thailand.
I drove my way from Huan Hin to Surat Thani by night bus. It was a long ride. I think about 6 or 7 hours long. Once I arrived in Surat Thani, a beautiful sunrise awaited me. From Surat Thani I left to Kho Phangan by boat.
Be patient.
Even though I have traveled for a long time by the time I arrived in Surat Thani, I still felt inner peace and no stress. I have learnt to be patient. Sooner or later I will get to my destination. There is no rush. That is what I have told myself at the beginning of my journey. I was so used to rushing through my daily life that I had to get used to slowing things down – and you know what? It was awesome. No commitments, just me and what I want.
So what I can recommend you first hand is the Echo Beach Hostel. The owners are super nice and the hostel is clean and well organised. One of the owners is a Dutch guy – a real party animal – who is super funny and has lots of cool stories to tell. Also they have a bar and a kitchen, so you can order breakfast, lunch and dinner with them. The food is really delicious! But, it is quite expensive to eat in the hostel than eating outside. So, only if you are really hungover or too lazy to go outside, you can eat there I would suggest.
What to see in Kho Phangan?
First of all I would suggest you to rent a scooter. You can do that with the help of the hostel I mentioned above. The island is too big to walk the whole time. But if you do, please be careful and avoid riding a scooter while drunk or similar stupid ideas. I have seen some really bad injuries here in Thailand caused by drunk driving or too fast driving. Please be careful and remember wounds don’t heal fast in the tropical heat. Anyway, so what to do in Kho Phangan?
- Amsterdam Bar
The Amsterdam Bar is located on a hill. It is a real beauty. They serve good food and nice drinks. I would say you should go there shortly before sun set. I have done that and it was really awesome. The atmosphere was so relaxed and it felt as if time stops. You know what I mean? Not a care in the world. Just pure awesomeness. You can really let go and be right in the moment, if you are ready for it. You need to allow yourself to relax which can be hard when you are used to a stressful daily routine.
- Bottle Beach
This beach is quite isolated and nice. You get there by boat which takes like 10 minutes. You should go back at a time shortly before sun set because when the boat picks you up and goes back you will face the sun set right behind the hills. Agree on a time once the guy drops you off.
